Zami: A New Spelling of My Name
by Audre Lorde (she/her)
What does elder mean?
An elder queer is (arguably) someone over the age of 50 who is a part of the LGBTQ+ community. The exact age of what defines someone as an elder queer is debated due to systemic issues such as the life expectancy of Black trans women being 35 years old and the previous life expectancy of gay and bi men during the AIDS epidemic being 34 years old. I chose 50 as it was the earliest decade everyone I talked to agreed qualified someone to be an elder queer.
Here are some resources and educational sources made by elder queers and their advocates.
They go deeper into this topic of while queer, and the intersectional issues often ignored due to ageism.
